Cat "old man," I LOVE bicycles. However, I live in the country where we get groups of cyclists blocking the road exactly as you describe. >THOSE< I HATE! Unfortunately cyclists are supposed to follow the same laws as cars, but there is no provision for them to do so. We need bike trails desperately, or at least bike lanes. I think it's stupid for bikes 'IN THE COUNTRY' to be required to stay to the right with their back to traffic. Helmet mirrors are worthless, and in order for a cyclist to see a car coming, the mirror must be mounted on the left-hand handlebar. This is of course is the side where the kickstand is mounted, so when the bike falls it destroys a ridiculously expensive mirror EVERY @#$%%$# TIME! A few years back I was legally riding down the right side a busy highway shoulder when an elderly lady came at me on a bicycle riding on the wrong side yelled at me "You're riding on the wrong side of the road." I mumbled under my breath "you are absolutely right." Now I travel the left side of the road the same as pedestrians. I'm MUCH safer, and since I moved the mirror to the right side I haven't broken a mirror since. It's idiotic to have automobile laws apply to bicycles which are nothing but pedestrians on wheels.
