Obiwan just said everything I could think of to say. I've got two buddies of mine that have PS3's that pull double duty as gaming machines and Blu-ray players for their High Def systems, and they look and sound fantastic. Plus like Obiwan and everyone else said they're 100% upgradeable, which makes them the best Blu-ray player on the market right now.

I mean yes you could hold off on Profile 2.0 compliant players if you want a regular style DVD player, but the ease of upgrading and using the PS3 is really something else to see. Plus you can link into the Sony store and download video game sample to see if you like the game before buying it. That's really cool IMO. And it also offers free online gaming, if you're into that stuff, whereas Microsoft charges I believe $50 or $60 dollars for a year of service.

I like your way of thinking AK, I've never really considered a ps3, preferring to wait for stand alone players to drop, but as you say it's fully upgradeable! So i may start looking at them, not sure if the online service is available here yet...

Yeah, it's hard to say if it's available in the U.K. or not. Over here you can play with everyone online for free, plus you can instant message and e-mail one another with it too. And like I said, Microsoft charges you around $60 per year for it's online service, although I have yet to see it in action though.

Still tempted... but still not ready to bite. I will say though, I did play with the demo unit in Best Buy for a little bit and rather enjoyed it... but... bah, still too expensive. These things better drop in price or offer one heckuva game bundle come Christmas time.

Here's another 'plus' for Blu-Ray: The discs are cheaper than standard DVD!

Most 2-disc standard DVDs are only single-disc on BD, and therefore less expensive. Even some 2-disc sets are fairly cheap. The Pirates Of The Caribbean series sells for only $22.00 at Wal-Mart here in Canada.

Those beautiful Stanley Kubrick discs? Single-disc Blu-Rays for under 19 bucks each.

Right now Best Buy and Wal Mart are giving out $100 gift cards with the purchase of a PS3. Double check with those retailers first though. But it should be good through at least Tuesday June 17 and possibly beyond.

I've been considering purchasing a PS3 as a Blu-ray player for a while now; I think it's the upgradability that makes it worthwhile. I mean, a stand-alone player is gonna cost me almost $400 anyways - why not spend the extra $100 and get the high-end PS3? It just seems to make the most sense.

Also if you spend the extra $100, you get the version that allows you to play most of your old PS2 games if you have any, so that's pretty cool.

True - I don't know why anyone would get the cheaper version. You can't play PS2 games on it, it doesn't have a wireless modem... it sucks.

I have a 40GB version and it does have the wireless connection. It is not backwards compatible....YET. It has no card slots and only 2 usb ports. Other than that it is about the same as my original maxed out model.
