Default PS3 firmware upgrade 2.40

Wow. this was a fun one. I downloaded this update for my secondary PS3 upstairs that does not have a lot of files on it. I waited for the update to be done and then I started the install. Then, I went downstairs and started it on my main PS3 in my theatre room. I started the install and went to check on the first one....I could not start the sytem up after the install. The main screen came on I got the music and then just waves. I panicked and ran back downstairs to find that the install was already done. I freaked out but luckily that machine was fine.

I called Sony about the install and they rufused tro warranty my second unit because I got it from work and I did not have a STORE receipt. . They told me there was nothing they could do even though the manufacture date was 3 months ago. I asked if this was a widespread problem and they told me they did not know.

I got off the phone and got online only to find out that many machines were doing the same thing and had to be sent to Sony to be fixed. 2 hours later Sony pulled the update. While I was online I found that taking the drive out of the PS3 and hooking it up to a pc and wiping the drive would fix it. I did so and hooked it back into the PS3 and all was normal. I lost all of my music, videos, and game save files but it retained the new firmware upgrade. It was a five minute process.

Sony's customer service SUCKS!!!! and I will never trust another firmware until I have backed up my files.......

God that sounds terrible! I'll have to ask two of my buddies that have PS3's if they have had any issues with the update or not. But they have the larger 60 or 80 gig version, so I wonder if that makes any difference or not... Oh well, I'm glad you still have a functioning PS3 in the end, and not an expensive paperweight. Files are a lot easier to be replaced most often, than spending another $400 on a new machine.

This problem affected all makes and models and was random. I will never trust an update again.

The one good thing in all this is I found out how easy it is to put in a different drive. I never though it would be that easy.
