Default Blue Ray Without a HD TV

Which should come first? If you have limited funds, should you get the TV or the blue ray player first? If you get the TV then you have to keep buying DVDs in standard, and then maybe upgrade. Where as if you buy the player, you just watch the blue ray discs at lower quality till you get the tv?

Does this logic make sense? Hi btw, I'm probably going to have a bunch of questions.

Cool

Yes I for one am a little confused here...
Why in the world would you want to buy a BR player and not have a HD/TV to play it on ???
If you buy the TV first you can watch HD/TV shows and disc until you get the blue ray player...
I think your logic is flawed...

Get the TV first. Bluray players are getting below the $200 mark now so they won't break the bank. Just hold off on buying DVDs and wait to start purchasing on BD. But get the TV first for sure.

I concur with Obi. Trying to watch HD on a non-HD TV will serve no purpose for now. At least with an HD TV you can really enjoy your standard DVDs a lot more.

The only upside I could see to doing it his way, would be that he could start buying the movies he wants right now on Blu-ray, that way he doesn't have to re-buy them later when he gets the HDTV. So instead of wasting the money on SD DVD's of say Iron Man and the Dark Knight, and then laying out more later on the the Blu-ray versions, you've saved all that money upfront. Plus you could enjoy the increased functionality of the PIP features and stuff like that. Just a thought...

Let me say the only reason to by a BluRay player is if you have the TV for it. Just because its cheaper to buy the BluRay doesn't mean it comes first.

Secondly, the upscale on current DVDs using HDMI technology is astounding. It really is.

Last, you are probably not going to buy every film on BluRay. If you were, then you should have a player and TV already because its freakin' expensive. Pick and choose the movies you will own on BluRay. That way you can hold off on current movies, or buy those select few on BluRay now...if you want the new release sale price.

But I can tell you, you will still watch DVD and buy them. Its the smart thing to do. I've bought just as many releases on DVD as I have on BluRay since I bought into the format.

Last night I watched both Poltergiest on BD as well as the 1977 Italian shocker Suspiria on standard DVD on my Samsung upconverting DVD player. I played them both on my 1080p HD television, and to my rotten 36-year-old eyes Suspiria looked like it had the sharper picture.

So I agree with Todd and reiterate my original point: Get the nice TV.

Alright, getting the nice TV. I just want to minimise the the buying of stuff that then needs to be upgraded, and you know there is the issue of the extras on the BD too, since they are bigger.

Sometimes. There is an increase in catalog BR being released that are movie only...or just a ported version of the DVD features.

I'm not really a special features person anymore. I just don't have the time with nearly 1100 titles in my collection.
