Well, like you said, for the people who find DVD to be the end all for now then Blu-ray does not matter. But, if you want the best quality and have an HD set then Blu-ray is the way to go. It is far better than DVD in terms of picture quality but if you don't have an HD set then it doesn't matter.
I think things will change a lot during this holiday season and prices on the movies will have to drop. And with the switch to HD here in the states on Feb 17th I think things will move along nicely. |

I'm very happily a Blu-Ray convert. Any new titles I purchase are BD, and I'm buying a few select catalogue titles to replace some DVDs.
But otherwise I'm keeping most of the my original DVDs for the time being, or until BD prices drop substantially. For the most part, I've even been selling off DVD titles that I just haven't watched in a while. It's time to simplify things.

Blu is amazing. However, there are some DVD titles out there that have incredible transfers and look amazing when they are upscaled to a solid TV.
But then there are the craptastic DVDs that look like pure shit, and watching them on a big TV is irritating as all hell. But even those DVDs look good on a small 30 inch TV. Also, I think a plasma screen is far more forgiving than a DLP or LCD. for me, at least, there is a greater loss of detail in a plasma screen. But once again, this really comes down to the TV you own. One thing that will change this is when studios really start packing BluRay with lots of bonus material that ISN'T available on DVD. Right now, film only BluRay or ports of old DVD material just won't cut it. |
