I've owned all three of these for a while now, but have finally gotten around to watching them in hi-def. Since Disney recently bundled them in a reasonably-priced package, I thought I'd knock out my mini-review.
The Curse Of The Black Pearl 4/5
Pirate movies having been out of vogue for some time,
tCotBP hit audiences by surprise, since most folks expected another theme-park movie like Eddie Murphy's better-left-forgotten
Haunted Mansion film.
A great cast and a solid story mixed with a fun sense of self-awareness make this a rare actioner that the entire family really can enjoy.
As for the BD disc, Disney ported over all of the extras from the original DVD release (sadly in standard definition but still good to see).
Picture and sound quality are reference-quality. If you want to show off your HD system, just pop this disc in and pick any scene of the open water.
Dead Man's Chest 3.5/5
The followup, while tremendousely entertaining, is a tad overlong at 2-and-a-half hours. The critics were split on it, but I rather liked the overt comparison to
The Empire Strikes Back that can be made while watching the film.
The BD is again a stunner in both the audio and video department.
At World's End 3/5
The final (?) chapter in the series suffered from an excruciatingly long running time, clocking in at almost 3 hours. 45 minutes of excised subplots (hello, Calypso...) would have definitely gone a long way towards making a truly satisfying finale. As it stands, there's a long dragging middle in a film that could have been quite fine otherwise.
The BD continues to hold Disney's high Blu-Ray standard, and this time the 2nd disc of bonus features is entirely in 1080p hi-definition. Sweet!
This trilogy is an excellent addition to any burgeoning Blu-Ray collection. All three films are available individually or bundled as a set.
