Patrick O'Brian -- (yes that Master and Commander chap) the Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin books are not just good stories, but good literature. They are well-crafted books from a technical standpoint, but still tell a great story.
Douglas Adams -- I loved his wit, and how he could state very pointed commentary on the world and make people laugh at the same time. God I miss him. JRR Tolkien -- The master of fantasy fiction. The Hobbit is good but Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece. JK Rowling -- I know some will think it heresy to mention Rowling along side Tolkien, Rowling however managed something few authors can, she can write books enjoyed by people aged 9 to 90. That's not something very many authors can say (and sadly it's something very few even *want* to say) Arthur Conan Doyle -- Sherlock Holmes the master detective. True, Doyle couldn't remember where poor Watson was shot, or even his name on occasion, the stories though are great reads. Robert Asprin -- His Myth series is fun, punny, and enjoyable reads. Rex Stout -- Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. You read the books for the characters more the than whodunits.

I have always been a fan of S. King for the longest time though not all books going into movies are good but Cujo was the first in life to give me chills after watching it then hearing my neighbors dog freak out as a kiddo. :D
I read some random stuff too like books by Stephen Wilde who is a very odd man to try understand. |

I am a big fan of anything mystery/crime relates. I don't think I could pick a favorite but I enjoy reading Josh Grisham, Mary Higgens Clark, Tess Gerritsen, David Baldacci and James Patterson.
I do agree, Tolkien's Lord of the Ring are in a league of their own. Also, as a kid the Anne of Green Gables series made a big impression on me. (I forget the author off the top of my head) |

My absolute favorite is Clive Barker. The man is an absolute genius, and a dang good artist to boot. He's twisted and always amazes me.
Followed by Charles Dickens. I love his writing and social criticisms. Nothing is more fun than a nice quaint Dickens tale.

I don't know if I have a favorite author, per se. I sort of consume authors and then move on. Like I read a bunch of Michael Crichton years ago, haven't read one since, same with Grisham, VC Andrews, John Saul, Loren Eisley...
I have favorite books, but not a favorite author. |

For me there are too many... One recent authour (for me) that i found to be really good is Arturo perez-peverte, who wrote The dumas club. On which they based the movie The ninth gate on. Douglas adams as mentioned was a genius, definately one of my favourites. The same can be said about Tolkien. Sven hassel is also a big favourite for me, there's lots and lots of authors i could say the same about. Not to mention the ancient writers like Homeros and those old timers.
