Default Book Suggestions For One Year Old?

I'm buying a present for a little girl who is turning one year old and would love to buy her some books instead of toys or clothes. Anyone have a good suggestion for a book that would be appropriate?

what about "goodnight moon"? that's a classic bedtime story for little kids.

How about a baby's first year memory book ???
For the parents to put pics and keepsakes and stuff in...
I know this sounds kinda lame, but I don't have one and wish I did...

Both of these are good ideas but I highly recommend anything from Dr. Seuss. Small children love the rhyming words as well as the bright, colorful pictures and they will enjoy Dr. Seuss for years.

If you choose Dr Seuss I would recommend the book 'Hop on Pop'. The others are rather complex even for adults to read, my three year old is only just getting into Fox in Socks and the likes.

Otherwise, the Sandra Boynton books, such as the 'Belly Button Book' are excellent.

I thought about Seuss as he's one of my favorites, but wasn't sure what the appropriate age level was for it. Maybe I just need to stop by B&N and make a nuscience of myself asking what sells, what girls like and what is good for a 1yr old.

For a child that young, I'd suggest anything with bright colorful pictures and eatable.

Really for that age, you don't need words, picture books are best. The child and her parents can look at the pictures together and pick things out. (What is yellow in this picture? where is the frog? that sort of thing) Unless she's a prodigy she's not up to reading anything yet.

As for the eatable part, kids that age discover their world with their mouth, cloth or hard cardboard are best.

If you're looking for something the child can treasure for a lifetime, Winnie-the-Pooh (the collected works) are wonderful childhood stories.

I'd recommend buying a book that may mean something to a child later in life. Like a nice keepsake edition of Charlotte's Web.
