Default Flowers as a Gift

My mom bought me a lovely bouquet of flowers for my birthday recently. She probably spent $50 on a huge variety in a vase. But it seems rather tacky to me as they died in a week and now I have nothing but an empty vase. You'd think she could have gotten a giftcard instead, lol.

Angry

What is wrong with you piggy ???
Flowers are the ultimate expression of emotion...
The fact that there only for the moment adds so much meaning to this...
I have spent thousands of dollars on roses in my life, but the return has
been 10 fold... Roses are my flower of choice and red is the color I choose...
I can't believe that you would be so petty as to say that you would have
rather gotten a giftcard instead... You mom obviously cares a great deal
about you and you should show her your appreciation... A GIFT CARD,
that just makes me mad thinking that you would think that... Grrr !!!

Flowers once in a while is sweet. Flowers all the time...well I could think of a lot of things I could've bought with the money. I guess, at the end of the day, it's the thought that counts, ey?

I agree a bit with both sides. Flowers once in a while are sweet and show thought but I feel odd when someone spends a fairly significant amount of money on flowers for me for a couple of reasons.

One is I just dont feel that comfortable with people spending a lot of money on gifts for me and the other is the flowers die so quick. Why spend so much on something that is going to disappear soon?

Also, while flowers are beautiful, I feel like it is also one of those gifts that people get when they don't know what else to get. The same can be said for a giftcard but at least a giftcard is practical.

I say keep flowers to special occasions, not really birthdays, and they should be more of a gift from a bf or something like that.

I think a few small flowers as a "I was thinking of you and got you this" kind of thing is cute and sweet - even if the flowers only cost a maybe 10 bucks.

Honestly I never saw the point in cut flowers. You take a beautiful living plant, cut it up and watch it die. Hmmmm.

I would rather someone gave me a potted plant. $50 is a huge amount of money for something that will be gone in a short period of time.

I guess in part I was raised in a home where cash was tight-in the extreme. So our flowers were in our beautiful flowering garden where we all spent a great amount of time. For occasions my father would buy my mother a new rose and as a consequence we had a number of beautiful rose bushes in everything from deep red, burgundy and yellow, to purple and white with every scent in between.

She got the beauty of the plant and the flower year after year when it bloomed. How better can you express your continuing love?

ITA with Abigail. If you are going to spend that much on a plant, buy a live one.

Unless you are gifting it to me, in which case, don't bother. I have a black thumb.
