I would have to personally say M. Night Shyamalan. Even though not all of his movies are great, he is an incredible director and can do mood like no other. He is amazing.

I don't know that Robert Redford is the best but he directed several good movies and also starred in many of them.

Lions For Lambs
The Legend of Bagger Vance
The Horse Whisperer
A River Runs Through It
Ordinary People

As for me, I would consider Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson as the best directory..

Few of his directions which I really find awesome were:
- The Man without a Face
- Braveheart
- The Passion of the Christ (which turned out controversial)

Mel Gibson for me is a great Australian-American actor, best film director, one of the film producer and a creative screenwriter.

My vote is split between Fellini, Hitchcock and Jodorowsky.
