Hey cats,
Love-him-or-hate-him director Michael Moore has posted his new film Slacker Uprising for download today. It's totally free, and you may burn it or give copies away as you see fit. The film is about his crusade to rally young voters during the 2004 election. While the election was lost, the film focuses on the newfound political interest in American youth. I'll be watching it tonight, and I'll add my thoughts about it here tomorrow. Here's the link: Michael Moore's SLACKER UPRISING

...And I'm back.
I have to chime in on what Todd said. I just don't understand the notion that if you're not a Republican then you 'hate America'. I've heard that so many times in the last few years. The Republican party has raped and pillaged your country for the last 8 years. They're also the one political organization which has the endorsement of the KKK, money-stealing evangelical organizations and all those big corrupt businesses which pride themselves in the destruction of America's economy. And here's what 2 different presidents have to say: "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt "Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels - men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion." -- Dwight David Eisenhower In short: A patriot challenges his government when he feels that it's not acting in the best interests of its people. That's the basic definition. Okay... Stubbs gets off the soapbox... The movie itself? It sucked. Unfortunately, it's not a very good film. It has basically no narrative. It's just assorted bits from 4-year-old rallies. There really isn't anything that stands out as a great, or even pretty good, moment. It really isn't even a movie. It's just a bunch of footage that runs together. And the worst part is that it should have come out right after the 2004 election. Looking at John Kerry now makes you realize that the Democrats didn't have a chance in hell four years ago. Since it is free, I recommend people check it out if they're interested in the subject matter. Otherwise I'd skip it.

Stubbs,
on what you were saying...I would say the same thing about any Republican doing the same thing. There just aren't any Al Gores or Michael Moores among them. These people have some serious issues. I have news for people. Global warming is bullshit. It is ALL cyclical. the world has had ice ages in the past and them the world heats up and then cools down. I am as green as I can be. I recylce, use those special lights and cut down on useless electricity but him making millions of dollars on a political scam is a joke. If he used that same effort to do some real good for the US them maybe we would have better results. I have news on the last 8 years. Thank Clinton for them. Because he cut the military and raised big time taxes and didn't take care of business overseas when he had the chance the last 8 years have suffered. |

Um...actually it was Clinton's military that had the success early in the war. That comes from what everyone in the military I know says. Changes in the military that have caused problems for the war are from Bush.
As for the taxes go, I ultimately have ended up paying more taxes during the last three years than the rest of my life, regardless of some economic stimulus check here or there. Films like ROGER AND ME or BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE don't show Moore as a psycho. Check out the film THIS DIVIDED STATE to see the political clash in Utah over Moore speaking at UVSC in 2004. That was amazing. Gore, surely has his stupid moments. But lets not forget Dan Quayle or even Bush's downright stupidity. Anyways....I ultimately don't care anymore. I've lived in Red states for too long. My vote just doesn't matter. |

At least there's a little bit of spirited political discussion going on here. I've known Obi for a couple of years now, and I've always known him as a rational guy with a great sense of humour. I'm glad that we can disagree without getting too weird.
I think it can perhaps be said that the political process has been undermined by a lazy and easily corruptable media. I'm a classic 'liberal' Canadian who sees Fox News for the propaganda machine that it is, but at the same time all the other news networks are just as guilty of not even trying to report real news anymore. It's like the producers of Entertainment Tonight took over the major networks and decided that viewers would rather hear about celebrity breakups than the ugly truth about the world. Side note: We here in Canada just had an election. I know, it didn't make the news in the U.S. Interesting to note that we have 13 registered political parties, and 3 more 'eligible' parties. There are essentially only 4 main parties, plus the Green Party, which is very very slowly gaining momentum.

I will never get upset or dislike anybody for what they say. We all have our own lives and of course people view things differently. I will never intentionally step on anyones toes. I respect this forum and everybody here and I don't think anything short of a personal attack (a serious one) would ever change that.
I know that the system here is corrupt by utter greed and the only thing that I blame Bush for is doing NOTHING. He was the laziest President to ever step into the White House. The attack on our Country and the war in Iraq is a direct result of Clinton letting things slide when he should not have. One thing on the tax thing with Clinton. My job gives me regular bonuses if I perform well and the economy holds up, but thanks to Clinton when I get those checks they are taxed at about a 45% rate. That is pure rape my friends. Thank you Clinton. He signed that into law. I do get it back when I do taxes but I need it during the year. With a family of 6 we need the money when I earn it and not on the governments schedule. |
