We've always bought used games and had a problem with one only. As long as you have a store nearby that can easily switch your damaged game with another one, then I think buying used games wouldn't be a problem. One tip a GameStop manager told me: used games for PSP (in particular) is as good as an unused one because of the way the game CD / cartridge is packaged. Majority of the CD is covered so it's very difficult to get it scratched.
