Default It was funny 20 years ago...

Do you ever go and rent an old comedy that was hilarious in your memory, only to realize the acting was horrible and the jokes were bad... and the movie was just a product of the times?

A youtube video I saw inspired me to go watch Coming to America. I recalled it being so funny, but it really wasn't. Dang, times have changed.

no way, "Coming to America" will always be a classic! I mean how can you not laugh at soul glow? Or the jewish barbers played by Arsenio and Eddie? And my personal favorite, Arsenio dressed as a manly woman...lol...i'm laughing just thinking about it. The acting may have been kind of bad, i'll give you that, but there are some jokes in that movie that still make me laugh today!

I also still enjoy re-watching that movie. Just about anything Eddie does has staying power and I loved that Arsenio was in Coming to America with Eddie. Perhaps it is a bit dated by now but it's still a classic Eddie movie.

There's a few things that hit me like that, but most of it is comedy too. I accept that the special effects will be aged, but it always saddens me when I have changed so much as to no longer find films funny. Sorry you didn't like it!

Question

I remember "Coming to America", in fact I remember it well...
It was a funny movie, but I don't want to watch it again...
I've already seen it, I know what going to happen, I already
know what they are all going to say... I would much rather
watch a movie I've never seen before with small amount
of time that I have to watch movies... There are a bunch
of new good funny movies out there, why watch something
that you have already seen ???

I have had the experience of rewatching something I have seen years before and had the same reaction. Not with coming to America though. I think Eddie Murphy is just good from all angles.

Most things don't disappoint when I watch them years later. I guess I just haven't changed that much and so I still find them funny-and I have forgotten what's coming by ten years on so I get the laughs all over again.

I just re-watched Airplane recently. When I was 8 it was the funniest thing in the world. Now it just seems forced. Hmm... Maybe it's me...

Dumb and Dumber is just nowhere near as funny now, as I found it to be 14 or so years back.

While I doubt it has to do with the age, and everything to do with the fact that it is the sort of film that doesn't look good on repeat watches.
