I would say you have no choice with an older movie that was shot in 1.33:1, just watch it with the bars on the side. I know I've tried watching regular TV programs on my GF's Dads 65" Mitsu, and they look horrible all stretched out or zoomed in. You just have to live with the side bars for some of these things I believe.

Yeah, with all newer TVs being the 16:9 format this is becoming a non-issue. I have been pro widscreen since the days of Laserdisc myself. And like it was previously said, people are going to crap a brick when they get a new TV and the image has bars on the side. I had to educate everyone I knew when DVD was new. Some poeple still don't understand.

My sister used to work at Blockbuster and she said when DVD was first being rented people would actually bring the movie back and say it was broken becuae they were not getting the "full" image. I laughed when she told me that.

Now with Blu-ray I think we will never have to worry about pan and acan again.

Oh nice - another ex-laserdisc enthusiast! Out of curiosity do you still have them, or have you long since ditched them?

As for the Blockbuster story, I fear had it been me working there I would have lost my job for laughing directly in the customer's face.

No, I do not have any of them anymore. I sold what little I did have about 4 years ago. I knew DVD was coming 2 years after I purchased Laserdisc and actually thought DVD might die after the lack of studio support and the announcment on Dixv at the time.. So, I kept it for some time. But I did end up going crazy with DVD at the same time. I don't miss paying $50 for one movie. BD is a deal compared to that.

I guess I'm still stuck in the dark ages because I prefer full screen versions. Most of my DVDs have either/or as the option but since I have an older television, the full screen is less annoying for me. When I manage to get my dream LCD television, I'm sure I will want the widescreen version.

I have to put it on wide screen, otherwise, it was REALLY small screen resolution!
