Converting VHS to DVD

We bought a converter that worked pretty terribly (only paid $20 on clearance) and have tried using the digital camcorder to do the same which worked a bit better. Is there anything that can do this reasonably well without costing an arm and a leg?

It depends on what you're converting.

If you want to transfer copyrighted materials, like your VHS collection, then you'll need to get yourself a DVD recorder with a region-free code. LiteOn and its subsidary Daytek make a few models which have easter eggs codes that allow you to shut off copy protection and region codes.

If you're just looking to transfer things like old home movies, you can do it with any DVD recorder (just plug the VCR into the inputs). Barring buying a recorder, lots of photo places can do it for you for a reasonable price.
