Default Do you think Blu Ray will "conquer" the market?

For some people this is a new format and maybe not all are willing right now to purchase new players that are able to support this format. Others just can't wait to get their hands on as many movies and music on this format as possible.

What do you think: is Blu Ray gonna "conquer" the market soon? Do you expect a slower move towards the new system?

I've been rooting against it, hoping HD DVD will win instead. It's definitely been on the fence for a while, as it looked like the pricing of the players themselves might help snuff out the momentum for this technology... however, seems like lately it's picking up plenty of steam as the player prices drive down and people get more and more into the high definition technologies...

Personally, I'm waiting for the time where we laugh at the days we used to actually need a big bulky player to put discs into in order to watch movies. I can sooooo see the future where it's all handled through wifi type downloads direct to the tv minus the need for any external hardware (other than maybe a backup drive).

Now *that* would be sweet.

Until then... I still hope blu-ray fails. I don't care for something that is so proprietary to one machine or one company.

Does anyone on this board actually own a Blu Ray player? With a proper setup, I'm curious to know really just how much of a difference there is between a standard upconvert dvd player and a blu ray player. Seems like things would reach a point where the untrained eye can't tell enough of a difference to justify the spending.

I think that blue ray technology will soon replace the DVD, since this you can put more spaces in it. This is just the case of CD and DVD a few years ago. New technology always replaces old ones. We can't stick with the past, we must always move on.

What is Blu Ray exactly? How different is it from the regular DVD and an HD DVD? I have a regular DVD player and don't feel the need to switch to any new technology just yet.

The difference is that it can hold a lot more data on a disc, which means it can deliver a much more highly defined picture. Next time you're in Best Buy or Circuit City, take a look at the blu-ray demos they have playing. It really is an insane quality picture. I'm just waiting for the prices to come down a little more.

Snookums (may i call you snookums?) ... one of the key things is that you really need a decent quality high definition tv (1080i/p) and use quality connections such as an HDMI cable to really see the full effect.

I do not think that Blu Ray will make it, sorry. The move has been too slow-I think it will be just like the mini discs of a decade ago-some loved them and bought them, but for most people it was just an unnecessary that they were unwilling to buy, and so they never caught on. CD's did the job well enough, mini discs just didn't have an edge on them. The same is true of Blu Ray I fear.
