Default What is blue ray

I've been hearing of this technology ever since December. So I thought it’s about time I know this new technology. I wonder if it’s like the cell phone technology, wherein you will get the number of a person who also has a blue tooth technology.

It's actually Blu-ray and is the name of a "next-generation optical disc format" jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA)" (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). It's a High Definition format of dvd video which allows for nearly five times the storage capacity of a standard dvd format (thus allowing more info to be stored which ultimately leads to ability to provide a higher format quality).

While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD.

Aren't you sorry you asked?

I've seen this new Blu-ray technology in the store, and it is pretty amazing... It seem like I was looking threw a window at the action on the screen... It was so clear that I was able to spot some small glitches in the special effects... But I know from experience that if I come out of the pocket and buy this set up, the following week they will come out with some new holographic TV that will put the blue ray back in the stone age... So for now I'm just going to stick to my old set with the crank handle on the side...

When I was buying a new TV, I saw a demo unit hooked up to a Blu-Ray player, on this top of the line TV it looked absolutely stunning. I can't wait for Blu-Ray to become as comoditised as DVD has become, then it'll be more affordable.
