What is the difference?

I keep hearing about HD-DVD's and Blu-Ray dvd's and how I should get them. I don't see any difference except maybe better image quality. Regular ones are still good enough for me but maybe I missed something.

I am also happy with the regular ones also esp. if they are cheaper.

Just a clarification and I hope you won't get offended, Blu-ray Discs (BD) are not DVD's. HD-DVD's have better quality and larger storage than normal DVD's. But Blu-ray Discs have even bigger storage than HD-DVD's but might compromise some of its qualities. BD's can have 40 GB to 100GB of storage in one disc.

The difference is in the storage capacity. When you are talking about the storage hardware, it is always the storage capacity that they are developing. No one would be developing their looks.

Oh ok, i didn't know that Blu-Ray was something else entirely. I don't really care for special features, all i care about is the movie so i guess it is no big whoop if i stick with the regular stuff.

I think FlixLover honestly don't know the difference that is why he or she (sorry for I'm not really sure of the gender), asks for it. And I guess that is also the reason why we have forums like this to clarify things that we don't know or have a blurry understanding.

Yeah, me too, I don't care what kind of discs the movie was stored to as long as the movie itself is good to watch. But there will come a time when BD's will become a common storage for movie collections. BD is now commonly used on PS3 while HD-DVD is commonly used on X-box 360.

That is good to know, I was completly clueless on this note. Is there any other difference we should know about?

Well I'll try and tell you what I know... Its called blu-ray because of the color of the laser... Regular DVD's use a red laser, blu-ray actually has more of a violet colored laser...



If you look at the cat chart above you can plainly see that violet is a much narrower wavelength than red... Five time narrower in fact, so this means using this gives the disc makers 5 times the room to work with... What it means to you and me is better picture and sound quality, more room for special features, and unfortunately more commercial junk...
