Default Blu Ray Wins The War... So Far

Seems like blu ray is taking the lead in the storage disc competition. Most movie companies have chosen blu ray as their storage media. Now even companies who are producing storage discs are stopping in making HD DVD. Will HD DVD become like the cassette tapes after CD have been created? Here is an article to support my idea.

I know that must be pretty scary reading for all these people
with DVD libraries, or collections, or whatever you call them...
But hey, I've said it before, buying those things is a waise of money...
They won't be good for anything but road side reflectors, or coffee coasters
in a few years...

Yeah i think blu ray is most definitely in the lead - i don't see that changing any time soon. I can't remember - I mean obviously blu ray discs can't play in a standard dvd player... but can standard dvds play in a blu-ray player?

Aperio at the present time both Blu-ray and HD-DVD player manufacturers have included the ability for their units to playback standard DVDs... This means your current DVD library is playable on either a Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD player... But when they say "have included the ability" it kinda throws up a red flag for me to think
that they may not aways be like that...

Yeah me thinks you're right on that one copycat.... I just read an article that said Toshiba has more or less conceeded defeat of the HD DVD format, so it looks like ye' ol Blu-ray actually has just about won this battle for sure now. Bugger.

Given the fact that we still use VHS for some things along side DVD, and VHS has yet to be pushed completely out of the market, I do not fear for my DVDs. Give it another decade and I might start to worry. People once feared for their CDs when mini discs came about, but mini discs are no where to be seen now.

Time will come that CD's will become antiques and we can sell them to collectors that wants original CD copies. This is just like turntable records that are collected by some fanatics of old recordings.

But so far, we don't have to panic because the price of Blu-ray players is so high that people still prefer DVD players. But yeah, after a decade or less, DVD's will be history.

Totally agree with this. I am actually dumbfounded that we still rely on a standalone player that actually plugs into the tv to play movies. It seems like such an ancient technology already. We should totally be at the point of having a little ipod-like unit that is everything - stores the movies, is the player itself and transmits to the tv wirelessly. You know it's coming at some point....

Frankly, i don't know that i will go running out to spend any big money on a blu-ray player any time soon. The dough just isn't worth it to me - i'm perfectly fine with the quality of my standard dvds at present time... and I am all about technology and the geeky stuff... but it reaches a point where the investment just isn't worth the results.

I'm playing a wait and see game to see which format wins out. It looks like I'm inching closer to actually going out and buying a Blue Ray player. My Dad keeps reminding me about his old Beta player though. Doesn't want me to waste my money.

I read somewhere that Sony (I believe) was abandoning the HD Market instead of trying to compete with Blu-Ray. I'll have to go back and try to find the article. They were going to focus on other things and essentially threw up the white flag on this battle.
