A mother (Mary Louise Parker) and her 3 children move to an old house left by their grand aunt. Her son, Jared, finds an old book authored by his great grand uncle documenting magical creatures and their secrets. This book is coveted by an ogre Mulgarath for the power that comes with the knowledge that this book holds.

After discovery, the book is opened and the adventure to protect the book from Mulgarath begins.

This movie is surprisingly good and very enjoyable. The effects are not in-your-face neither is the acting. It was just a movie where everything meld seamlessly together...like reading a good memorable story. It's a movie I recommend for the whole family and it's very nice for a weekend rental with the kids.

We rented this last weekend and while it was rather nice compared to some of the DVDs lately my husband was sad it didn't have more of the book in it. I never read the book but I thought the story was a nice heartwarming tale and I didn't even notice the special effects I was so focused on the characters. I am going to have to go buy the book and compare them myself and look through the adorable pictures.

Our public library showed this movie and I took my two nephews, four and six, to see it. They both loved the movie and so did I. The youngest was a little scared at first when the mother and her children first arrived at the house and strange noises were heard. But when he discovered the cute little creature responsible for them, he really got into the movie. This one I will probably end up buying because they will want to watch it again and again.
