Default Mailbox

The never ending saga of my mailbox seems to finally be over for this year. It got hit by the snowplow three times this winter. The last time my temporary metal post got frozen into the snow bank and I couldn't use that. Believe it or not as soon as it thawed somebody stole the post for scrap metal. Fortunately my neighbor had a good metal replacement post for me and I installed it today. If I was a bit richer and had more time I'd put in a concrete pier and watch the plow get busted next winter.

Ok, this is pretty funny! (I know, probably not so funny to you!) Can't you complain to your county/town about the snow plow problem? That just doesn't seem right!

I complained to them and would you believe they told me the road allowance belongs to the town and if something gets in the way it'll get hit. I was pretty incensed by that answer. I know when to make my noise though. When the next municipal elections come up I'll bring this up again. I've got a long memory and I can heckle with the best of them.

Bummer. Maybe you need to move your mailbox back a little further onto your property. Although, that may not be very convenient for the postal workers.

Awww. That is just weird. Is your mailbox oddly placed that it gets hit by by a snowplow often? And what is it with the post getting stolen? A bit hilarious for me. Maybe it's jinxed or something....

Mailbox was there for five years without ever getting hit. I moved it back about a foot but I have to be careful because our letter carrier won't drive into the ditch to deliver my mail. I think they got a new plow driver this year because I never heard of too much trouble before this winter. On one of the back roads apparently he took them all out. We live on the main road and I know he hit at least three others in the area. The concrete pier idea definitely has a certain appeal.

I think a brite day glow flag of some kind on the front of the box sticking up a ft. or so would help.

I don't think that warning will help when they have the attitude of 'if it's in the way then we'll take it out rather than going around it. That kind of arrogance cannot you cannot win against.

I had the same issue when we lived on a main road. One year someone else won the bid for extra help and decided mail boxes were not necessary as they were "in the way" despite having been in the same dang spot for 5-50 years. Needless to say they are barred from bidding to plow these days.
