Default Private Roads Does not Equal No Laws

Whats with people and thinking just because its a private road that there are no laws? Posted speeds are still to be observed, drugs are still illegal, and underage drinking is a no-no. Argh. So much for a relaxing weekend.

Yes thats right, local police have general authority to govern the use of any streets
within their respective jurisdictions... That includes private roads, drives, parking lots,
and your own back yard for that matter if they want to push it... But it is also a
well known fact that as a general rule, laws are not as strictly enforced on private roads...
I'm guessing spiderpig that you have had some recent problems with this, possibly
in your own neighborhood community... We would love to hear more
and maybe one of us could give you some advice on the matter...

We've had nothing but problems on our private road too. People speeding up and down, which has gotten much worse since we paved it 2 months ago. Before that it was kids tearing up the dirt road on ATVs and dirt bikes. And in the summer it's stupid rafters parking on the private road, even though it's clearly labeled no-trespassing!

Local cops don't give a flip.

Yeah we live right near the water, many of the homes also have deeded moorings as well as water rights. So of course every summer holiday everyone has a huge party and every idiot they know shows up to "visit" which involves abusing the water access and tearing up and down the lane. The one neighbor had someone get dropped off (carrying a huge bottle in a brown paper bag) and the girl tore down the road and peeled out. She was going about 30 coming down, 40 on the way out. She almost hit a family who lives here, whose father told her to slow down before she lost the right to drive on the road. She was a bit better picking up the drunken idiot.

We have a road committee (and everyone pays dues based on frontage and home occupancy limits) which governs such things. Posted speed is 10mph, but they have barred people from using the road before and we have a restraining order on one of the locals from the far end of the road who moves the safety log at the waterfront (log with dirt behind it partially dug in to prevent sliding into water in winter/driving into water in dark because he's nuts.

I normally call the cops. I've lived in one part or another of the town for decades so they know better than to just shove me off. If we call they have to show up. If they don't the road committee sends a letter to the PD and local paper...
