During a game of golf, he suffered an infarction in his right leg, which went undiagnosed for three days due to doctors' concerns that he was exhibiting drug seeking behavior (House was also unable to diagnose his own infarction). An aneurysm in his thigh had clotted, leading to an infarction and causing his quadriceps muscles to become necrotic. House had the dead muscle bypassed in order to restore circulation to the remainder of his leg, risking organ failure and cardiac arrest. He was willing to endure excruciating post operative pain to retain the use of his leg. After House was put into a chemically-induced coma to sleep through the worst of the pain, Stacy decided to choose a safer surgical middle-ground procedure between amputation and a bypass by removing just the dead muscle.

Translation: Hurt his leg during golf game. Didn't get it tended to soon enough. Ended up having surgery to keep leg as opposed to having it chopped off. Insert cane and limp. End of story.

Really? There was this episode when he was asking the applicants for his team to solve medical cases (it was the episode with Carmen Elektra in it). He is crippled because he was infected with something that made the muscle in his leg die, I'm not too sure about the cause. The doctors were supposed to amputate his leg but they took out the dead muscle instead. In one of the episodes where he was asking Cuddy for a shot of morphine, he did show her his leg and there was a chunk of muscle missing from his thigh.

I love the show and if anyone has seen the shot of his leg its really nasty. I am sure it does cause a great deal of pain, but he does overact it as well. Did you know the name was pulled for a funny towards Sherlock Holmes?

In fact lately he has started using the leg again, and no cane. Spontaneous regeneration of the nerves has been quoted as the reason behind it, though it hasn't made him less cantankerous
