Default Golden Compass

I just saw this movie at the cinemas yesterday, and I will most defintely be getting it on DVD when it comes out!

I'm not sure of a few points though. The ending (not meaning to be a spoiler) was clearly set up for another movie (hooray!). I thought that the golden compass was based off a book, so does anyone know how many movies to exect? I would rather wait for a box set than buy each one individually.

(If it's out overseas, then you probably already know. It's still a new movie here)

I haven't seen the movie, but according to wikipedia, the book the film was based on is part of a trilogy, but I haven't heard anything about sequels to the film

Talking

"The Golden Compass" was written by Phillip Pullman who is an atheist like myself... Its based on the first book in his Dark Materials Trilogy called "Northern Lights"... Its a 3 book set, the next one being "The Subtle Knife"... The last book is "The Amber Spyglass", the books have sold over 15 million copies world wide... Phillip has said that his books are all about killing God and undermining Christian beliefs... These children's books have won many prizes and awards, the Carnegie Medal of Children's Literature in 95 and again in 07... The last one "The Amber Spyglass" won The Whitbread Prize in 2001, the very first children's book to ever do so... I thought "The Golden Compass" was a great movie, and I do hope to see the other two on the big screen... I don't dislike Christian's, some of my best friends are Christian's... But I do wish you peeps would wake up and smell the coffee, and stop fighting and killing one another over who has the best imaginary friend...

Thank you for that. I don't think it was released as 'the golden compass' down here, which is why it was familiar but I couldn't find a book by that name.

There's almost certainly going to be a trilogy though, the movie ended in such a way to imply it and I'm sure it has been popular enough, especially considering modern trends. I guess I'll wait for a box set.

Does anyone know if the book is better than the movie?

Actually the movie bombed at the box office...many found the story hard to follow and non engaging. It made far less than the budget spent to create it. There has been much speculation that they will not make the follow up movies to it.

Frankly, I wouldn't touch the movie or books with a ten foot pole. Anyone with any shred of faith or religion (so that excludes you copycat..lol) should think twice about supporting a storyline that is aimed specifically at promoting atheism (as stated by the author) and, if i'm not mistaken, is ultimately about killing God. Not cool in my book.

Yes I understand where your coming from girl...
I was once just like you in the sense that I
would never read or listen to anything to do
with atheism... The Bible teaches that to even
think about such things is a sin in itself...
It make me mad to hear someone say, there
is no God... I bet that is the way you feel
right now... But lets just think about this,
Why would your God create man who is full of
curiosity and a need to know, and then demand
that you not question his existence ??? You know
like he is all powerful and stuff, seems like it would
have been pretty easy to make a man that would
not want to question his existence... I hear people
talk about "God performs medical miracles every day"...
If so, how come he never cures amputees ??? Not even
one, great pianist, and artist have lost there limbs before,
good God fearing people... So why don't God step in and make
them grow a new one... He does it for frogs, why not people...
If you think about it a little bit you will know why... If you were to
read and study the Bible as much as I have, I'm sure you would understand...
And let me say this, if you show me a intelligent, well educated preacher, bishop,
father, or what ever... I'll show you a fricking thief that is getting rich off the less
intelligent, uneducated people of the world... Because he knows there is no God too...

I have those shreds, but I am still interested in seeing the movie. I belive in being openminded about other peoples beliefs and religions or lack thereof. It's just a movie, it's entertainment nothing more.

I was interested in seeing the movie but after the opening weekend reviews figured it was better as a $5 rental than a $10 movie. I rather liked the books as a child being somewhat ambivalent about religion and all that jazz. I bought the polar bear toys though on sale at Toys-r-us. They were cute.

FlixLover, did you not watch the video I posted right above you...
I think you are compromising your shreds of religion with your open
mindedness... If you'll take the time to read your Bible, and not just
listen to what others tell you... You'll find that there is no room for
open mindedness in your religion, its all pretty cut and dry... To even
watch a movie like "The Golden Compass" is a sin in itself... Your God
doesn't even want you to even consider the fact that he is not real...
I would say that if you go see this movie that you starting to lean
toward agnosticism instead of Christianity... Personally I hope so,
I think its high time for people to open there eyes...
