Following 1988's Rattle and Hum, it became U2's second theatrically released film. Footage from nine different concerts were shot, using as many as 18 cameras at a time, and were edited together to create an 85 minute film featuring a 14-song performance.
The project was created to experiment with a new type of 3-D film technology, created by 3ality Digital in 2005. The film was praised for its 3-D technology and innovation, although it peaked at number 19 and brought in $12.4 million after the first three months, short of the film's budget of US$15 million. The band stated that the film was not created to make a profit, but rather to share the new 3-D technology with a mainstream audience.

Generated entirely by this four-wheeled media machine, this is both an account of Gibson’s life and work and a commentary on the world outside the car windows.
