Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury) digs up a time capsule in his elementary school and shows the mysterious sequence of numbers he found to his father, Professor John Koestler (Nicolas Cage). On studying the numbers, John realizes that the numbers, in fact, are an encoded message detailing every major disaster since the time capsule was buried. The message further indicates the occurrence of three similar disasters, the last of which indicates a doomsday scenario and is seemingly having direct links with Caleb and John. To stop the prophecy from becoming true, John tracks down and seeks the help of Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne), the daughter of the messages author, with John ready to make the ultimate sacrifice.
