Extras:

A battered, alcoholic veteran of the Civil War finds himself in Japan peddling Winchester guns. The Emperor makes him a deal that he can't refuse. The American soldier is hired to train the new Japanese army in war tactics.

The new army is set to confront the displaced samurai when the American is captured by the enemy and forced to understand the way of the samurai warriors. Ultimately, he is forced to make a decision as to which side of the conflict he wants to defend.

	First of all we need to have 2 things straight: 1. I don't like Tom Cruise normally 2. I love Japan a lot The movie was BEAUTIFUL. I got the DVD from my father who's also a fanatic when it comes to Japan (I read Shogun after he mentioned it, so we do have some similar taste) and he told me something like "watch this, you're gonna like it". I got the DVD from my father who's also a fanatic when it comes to Japan (I read Shogun after he mentioned it, so we do have some similar taste) and he told me something like "watch this, you're gonna like it". So I watched it. The plot was interesting, even if predictable in many stages. Still it was pretty OK and I was all ears and eyes. Tom Cruise was no longer the "cute guy" we were sick of already from so many "cute" movies. In this movie we have a mature guy, with a beard and attitude. An actor who seems to know more than just make cute faces, an actor who worked hard enough at his Kendo techniques so that the Katana and Bokken would look "natural" in his hands (as opposed to Uma Thurman in that totally uninspired Kill Bill. Jesus that was some horrible sword wielding). For some minutes I was convinced this guy was worth such a good role. He acted, jumped, fought, yelled, cried as natural as the hero itself. The movie had it all: fight scenes, crying, some social issues being presented, the cherry blossoms, the Tori gates, Hakamas (thos black large pants), Samurais, Kendo, Katanas, God it was delicious for any Japanese fanatic as I am ... I have to say with all my strength this was a well made movie. I watched it with my eyes wide open (as oposed to them "wide shut" .. I assume some other movie buffs here know what I mean :D), withouth even daring to breath. I was sad and happy at the same time, it was worth my time. Who else did watch this? :) (close)
