Jack (David Goldsmith) is an emotionally dysfunctional loner on a road trip with his imaginary girlfriend 'Sally.' He promises to rid himself of his bad habits and marry her. Along the way, he picks up a dark and beautiful young hitchhiker Beth (Rachael Leigh Cook) with secrets of her own. On the road they discover an escaped mental patient, Bugs (Michael Weston), stowed away in their car. Bugs is on a mission to find his dream woman, coincidentally named 'Sally.'
When Jack and Bugs discover that they both desire 'Sally', the tension begins to mount as both men claim that 'Sally' is theirs. While the struggle between Jack and Bugs grows, so does the relationship between Bugs and Beth who are beginning to fall in love. This only serves to infuriate Jack.
In a heated argument, Jack tries to strangle Bugs and Beth steps in and shoots him. Beth and Bugs put the wounded Jack in the trunk and continue their journey. Just when they think they found the feeling of normal love, the police catch up with them. The three are taken back to Marlboro Mental Home for supervision. Once there, Beth reveals that she is pregnant and the controlling Head Physician, Dr. Felch (Sam Coppola), forces her to have an abortion.
Jack and Bugs must let go of their rivalry and work together to rescue Beth...before its too late.
